A Cup of Venom for the Road

Today I got a Washington Post News flash noting that Trent Lott was resigning. When I clicked to view the article I went on to view the comments readers attached to the article. While I am probably pretty closely politically aligned with those making these comments, I was struck by the venom directed at him. I think this is a telling statement on the state of politics today where it has become common practice to make every issue a personal issue.


Let's remind him not to forget his hairpiece. Goodbye!

Made enough money in congress for him and generations of his family to live like kings for rest of thier lifes so its time to retire. The country needs term limits and then maybe True Americans will run for office instead of the treasure seekers we have now.

I would feel better about Lott's departure if I thought there were any chance of replacing him with someone who is less of a Republican ideolog. Unfortunately, he is a perfect reflection of his state, and the next person to fill his office will be as well.
Mississippi is changing, but ever so slowly. It will be Republican and racist for quite a while yet. Texas will fall first.

After 1 January, persons leaving Congress may not register to lobby until two years have passed. Those leaving before 1 January, however, may register and lobby after being "out of Washington" for only 1 year. Perhaps Mr. Lott is simply venal. He may want to supplement his generous congressional retirement money with the dollars generous firms and right wing ideologues pay well-connected ex-Senators and Congressmen for jollying up their successors and ex-colleagues. Could it be, Mr Cheerleader-of-the-Right?
