7 Minutes of Mayhem

A neighbor and I had a bet about Hagler Leonard fight. She lost. Instead of attending what she thought was Hagler Leonard 2, she actually attended Hagler Hearns. The bet was Hagler never fought Leonard twice. (I am right, I'm always right Eve get used to it).

She did attend Hagler Hearns which was the best short fight I ever saw. Two great boxers stood in front of each other and threw haymakers for a little over 2 rounds. The whole 7 minute fight is in the YouTube below (isn't you tube great??). If you want to see why boxing was such a great sport in the 80's, watch these two guys. 100% pure competition at it's finest.

It is a shame boxing has self destructed. It is amazing how irrelevant boxing has become. Corruption and bad judging has ruined the sport. Boxing is so irrelevant that it aspires one day to be as popular as the NHL.

Boy was Hagler great.

Repeat after me Eve "you are right, you are always right".

NOTE: to tie this in to my usual blog theme, John McCain tried to save boxing by mandating a national boxing commission.

Quick addendum: If you never got much of a chance to see Hagler fight, this shows what a brilliant boxer he was. Absolutely devastating.

The deal is, Sugar Ray took such a beating from Marvelous Marvin that he NEVER wanted to face him again. WHen you consider that Leonard was one of the greatest middleweights in history, what does that say about Hagler? He was great but didn't get his shot till later in his career. Do you remember what he did to Vito Antuerfermo (sp?)? Wow.
In the fight that you show, I remember watching it and thinking that the first round was the greatest first round of boxing I had ever seen. I don't think that will ever change now.

I rembember the Antuefermo fight watching it live on Saturday afternoon (with you no less) and Hagler destroyed him. Knocked his mouth piece right out of his mouth and then was pelted with beer bottles by a disappointed English crowd. Crushed the champ in front of his home crowd.

Hagler absolutely beat Leonard, but his little flurries of harmless punches at the end of each round were enough for judges who seemed to be looking for a reason to give Leonard the fight.

Yep, I remember that too. Shame that Hagler became destroyed by something else.
